5 Must-See Attractions in Childers, QLD

By Elly McGuinness

We recently spent over two months house-sitting in Childers, Queensland. Although it’s a small town, it boasts several attractions worth visiting. Read on to discover our top picks for things to do in Childers, Qld!

Childers Historic Complex

We were genuinely impressed by our visit to the Childers Historic Complex. Childers is such a little town, so we knew it wouldn’t be like the museums in the big cities, but the quaint buildings pack plenty inside!

I think the staff were impressed by us too. They receive school groups coming through, but don’t often get the same level of interest that our kids showed.

For only $5 for adults (kids are free), one of the staff members will take you on a guided tour through the complex. From the school room to the indigenous artifacts, the general store, main house, barn, and steam train, there is plenty to explore.

The kids can climb on the train and play. There are other items inside the buildings they can play with too, such as an old shark alarm, telephones, etc.

The museum is open on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings. We also stayed afterwards to eat our lunch at the picnic benches and relax a while longer.

We definitely recommend a visit to the Childers Historic Complex for anyone interested in the area’s history and people.

Childer’s Art Space and Backpackers Memorial

The Childers Art Space and Backpackers Memorial is located in the town centre. Inside, you’ll find a small corner with local art and handicrafts. Most of the space is dedicated to the Backpackers Memorial, a touching tribute to the 15 young lives lost in the Palace Backpackers fire in 2000. It’s a somber but important reminder of the town’s history, thoughtfully presented with photos and stories. Together, the art space and memorial make for a meaningful and reflective stop in Childers.

Childers Pharmaceutical Museum

The Childers Pharmaceutical Museum is in its original building from the late 1800s! For an entry fee of $5 for adults and $2 for kids, a staff member will walk you through the Old Pharmacy’s back room and share some of its history.

It’s a neat place to visit and soak up the town’s history. Our kids enjoyed making pills (made of blue tac!) using the manual (old-school) cutter.

We recommend visiting the Old Pharmacy if you’re looking for things to do in Childers, QLD. You can even purchase traditional sweets there that are not commonly found in many shops today.

Military and Memorabilia Museum

The Military and Memorabilia Museum is another hidden gem in Childers that’s absolutely worth a stop. It’s run by passionate volunteers who have curated an impressive collection of war memorabilia, including uniforms, medals, weapons, photos, and personal letters.

There are also displays from other parts of Australia’s history, making it fascinating for both adults and kids. The friendly staff are always happy to share their knowledge and the stories behind the artifacts. It’s a great way to step back in time and learn more about Australia’s military heritage.

Russo Nature Park

Russo Nature Park is a gorgeous spot to visit, about a five-minute drive from Childers.

It’s ideal for a short trail run or walk in nature. A little (and gentle) track takes you to the ‘lookout’, where you can’t see much except trees and a few houses (but it’s still nice).

Check out the 400-year-old blue gum tree along the way, and don’t miss the rainforest vines. My kids could have spent all afternoon at this little spot, sitting in the natural swings and hanging from the vines.
