Why Melbourne’s West Deserves Your Next Family Adventure
We’ve written before about how many fun places there are for adventures in Melbourne, but we think the West has been seriously underrated until now. Beyond the city’s hustle and high-rise pace, the West offers a rich and grounded way to explore – it’s a multicultural destination full of new experiences.
Between public transport and parking, it’s easy to get to the Westside with kids. The West is also a cultural haven, which we think is so important for kids to be immersed in from a young age. It’s also one of the most affordable pockets of Melbourne for adventures. There’s something to work for pretty much every parent’s budget.

Learning Through Play and Exploration
We strongly believe in giving our kids access to discovery-based experiences. We want them to learn through play, which is where adventure activities in Melbourne, like the indoor play space SuperPark Melbourne and the Scienceworks Spotswood museum, provide the perfect backdrop.
New experiences foster curiosity, a key ingredient for learning through play. We’ve written about this in our Intentional Parenting category. Melbourne’s West has some of the best adventures in Melbourne, and they’re just waiting to be discovered by local families and visitors alike.
9 Highlights of Melbourne’s West for Families
Maribyrnong River Trail & Parklands
Saturday mornings are for looping around the river. Maribyrnong River is a scenic stretch perfect for a bike ride or a stroller-friendly walk. There are always plenty of dogs to pat, and families can enjoy the riverside art installations.
If you’re doing a shorter loop, we recommend packing a picnic and grabbing coffee from one of the nearby cafes.

Scienceworks Museum (Spotswood)
See how science works. That’s the basic premise of Scienceworks Museum, which delivers hands-on STEM fun for all ages. It has been doing just that for more than 30 years. Scienceworks is one of our favourite day trips to foster curiosity-driven education for our kids.
It’s also home to the Planetarium, an awe-inspiring experience for any young human to understand how big the universe is. Our best tip is to pre-plan your visit and book any tours or presentations you really want to see. Pack plenty of snacks to keep everyone’s energy up, as it’s easy to spend a whole day here.

SuperPark Highpoint (Maribyrnong)
The ultimate indoor play centre and adventure park is located in the West! SuperPark Melbourne is purposefully designed for kids of all ages to move more. From the pedal car track to the augmented reality games and the giant slides, it’s the perfect destination for kids to explore and build their confidence in a safe environment. Especially great when the cold weather makes Melbourne parklands unappealing.
Conveniently located at Highpoint Shopping Centre, there’s even an on-site cafe with seriously good St Ali barista coffee and treats the whole family will like.

Footscray Market & Cafés
Melbourne markets are a truly magical part of living in Melbourne, and Footscray Market is one of the best multicultural markets in the city. It’s a real experience with amazing tastes, smells, sounds, and sights. Try the Vietnamese coffee at Scarlett Corner Cafe – it’s absolutely delicious.
Footscray Market is a wonderful outing to teach kids about local produce and show them the diversity in food and culture. We recommend getting the train to Footscray station as parking can be hectic.

Quarry Park Mountain Bike Trails (Maribyrnong)
This is a bit of a hidden secret in Melbourne’s West – a purpose-built mountain bike park! There’s a trail for every skill level, from easy to intermediate (and even intermediate with jumps).
We like to start in the dedicated skills area mostly, but there are also two pump tracks. If you wander a little further, Quarry Park also features the Melbourne Korean War Memorial, which offers a chance to talk about history with your kids. It’s best to bike down to the trail, but you can park at nearby Footscray Park if you need to.

Yarraville Gardens & Village
One of our favourite spots to be on a sunny day is Yarraville Gardens, which should really have the unofficial tagline of “best place for a picnic”. A quick stop at Hello Gorgeous Cafe for ice cream, and then it’s onto the playground.
You’re also only a short walk from Yarraville village if you need to grab anything for lunch. A great outing for families with four-legged family members, especially as dogs can be off-leash at Barbara Beyer Reserve or Greelish Oval (if there are no games on).

Williamstown Beach & Botanic Gardens
It’s easy to spend a full day in Williamstown. For an ideal day out, combine your trip to Williamstown with a ferry ride from Docklands. It takes about an hour, after which you can explore all that Williamstown has to offer.
Even if it’s not warm enough for a proper Williamstown Beach day, there’s still plenty of spots for coastal walks and, of course, ship spotting. The historic Botanic Gardens is the perfect picnic spot under one of the shady trees. When the kids are ready to head home, the Williamstown Beach railway station is only a few minutes walk.

Braybrook Community Hub
Something we love most about Melbourne’s west is how it creates spaces for family connection, like the Braybrook Community Hub. There are so many amazing events held throughout the year (many of them free) as well as community classes in everything from Thai cooking to chess club.
It’s truly a space for learning with classes, the library, community gardens, and the Aeroplane park for meeting up with friends. Sometimes it’s nice to skip the tourist spots and let the kids enjoy their own backyard. Discover more to do in Maribrynong.

Altona Coastal Park & Wetlands
Turn the kids into birdwatchers with a trip to the salt marshes of Altona Coastal Park. It provides an excellent opportunity to learn about revegetation and nature preservation with plenty of gentle walking trails to explore.
Try the Twitch Hunt to see how many of the 20 bird species your kids can find using the map.

Slowing Down and Living Intentionally
In what feels like a fast-paced world, we like to explore mindfully and forge connections in our local areas (wherever we may be at the time)! It’s about finding depth and experience, or what we call “small-scale travel”.
We try to explore areas close to home and uncover what makes those areas special, like when we covered the best things to do in Phillip Island and our list of the 19 things to do in the Dandenong Ranges.
Melbourne’s West is a cultural haven of hidden gems. For families, it can be both a playground and a classroom delivering incredible cultural and social lessons. What the West does best is bridge the intersection of culture and learning. It offers plenty of opportunities for exploring and enjoying unique family-friendly adventures.
