Why is an unschooling family posting about an online math platform?
You might be confused about why an unschooling family writes a post about something like this.
Well, unschooling doesn’t mean unlearning. Things like fractions, timetables, and telling the time have come up in real-life situations. And then Colin and I try to find resources and tools to help facilitate the kids’ learning.
(We don’t often “teach” them directly, but instead put the resources they need in front of them).
We also let them choose what and when they learn, so we’ll check if a resource aligns with what our kids want before we purchase it or put it in front of them.
Ayla picked up her Tables Fables resource and loved it. She worked through all the levels and the first Table Fables challenge and learned her timetables within a few weeks.
They make it so easy and fun with these lovable characters and stories that the kids want to pick it up and learn through their own intrinsic motivation.
Table Fables evolved into fables world
Fables World started as Tables Fables, originally designed to help kids learn their timetables in a fun, innovative, and easy way. Their online platform also had other features like addition, subtraction, and telling the time.
While we were trialing the service, it evolved into Fables World. It became apparent that this small company had big plans to expand its offering and help kids with various subjects.
They’re a family-run company new to the market and will continue to add more subjects as they grow.
It’s fantastic to see the platform evolve. Initially, I thought it would have a short life span for learners because it makes it easy for them to learn their timetables, and then they kinda don’t need it anymore.
However, because they’re adding all these other features and have plans to add additional subjects, it becomes a valuable learning platform with a longer lifespan.
Fables World 1:1 sessions
On Fables World, they have this excellent offering where you can book a 1:1 session. When they evolved into Fables World, their first new feature was a technique for learning fractions quickly and easily.
The timing was perfect for us. Ayla had already learned her timetables using Table Fables, but fractions were something she struggled to understand beyond the basics.
We booked the 1:1 session to learn the fractions technique. She learned simplifying fractions, adding, and mixed adding in one lesson.

Fables World website features
Each section of the Fables World website (Simply Maths, Clever Clocks, Table Fables, and Farting Fractions) offers three levels so your kid can work at the level that best matches where they’re at.
The first level shows a short and fun video using the story characters. Combining audio and visuals helps cement learning, and the video also tells the child the equation’s solution. Your child then clicks the answer to the equation on the next screen.
Level two shows the characters visually but without audio and video effects. Your child selects their answer without being told it beforehand.
If incorrect, the program takes them back to that specific level one video to see and hear the correct answer, so they can then select it on their level two screen.
The following is a low-down of what Fables World offers. Read on to discover what areas they can help your kid improve math and other skills in a fun and easy way.
Table Fables
Table Fables was the central part of the website we used. As I mentioned, this was their primary offering when we first signed up. It was also perfectly in line with what we were looking for at the time.
Ayla worked through the three multiplication levels and nailed her timetables within a few weeks!
She noted that level one for division didn’t have videos like the level one multiplication does. She said it would be good to have them because the videos help her learn.
She was still learning that division is just rearranging a multiplication equation and was starting to get this by the time she’d been through the three multiplication levels. However, she says she would have learned division more easily with level one videos.
Tables Fables also has a games and tips section for other tools and resources to help kids practice multiplication.
Farting fractions
The fractions section of the website helps kids learn by injecting a good dose of humor. And what kid doesn’t love toilet humor?!
Farting fractions covers:
- Simplifying
- Adding
- Mixed adding (two methods)
- Substracting
- Mixed subtracting
- Multiplying
- Dividing
- Mixed dividing
Clever clocks
Clever Clocks is the section that helps kids learn to tell the time. It offers a video explanation first and has three levels asking you to set the clock by moving the dial to the correct time. Level four includes questions with time calculations, so it’s more like problem-solving.
Ayla could already tell the time before we came across this platform, so we didn’t use this section.
Simply MatH
Simply Math is essentially addition and subtraction. Ayla already knew addition and subtraction to the level on the site, so we didn’t really use it much. However, it’s a good tool for increasing proficiency for those who already know the basics.
challenges and rewards
One of the most remarkable features of the Fables World website? Your kids win cashback and soft toys for completing challenges, which they call “quests” on their website. And yes, rewards can be a successful form of extrinsic motivation.
Ayla completed the 19-day challenge to learn her timetables. The challenge was fantastic because it arranged the learning material into easy-to-digest lessons. The challenge uses the same teachings as the rest of the platform but includes levels one to three in a single lesson.
At the quest’s end, Ayla was excited to win cash for her efforts! It’s far more than she gets for helping out with jobs around the house, that’s for sure!
She started on the second challenge level, where she could win more cash and a soft toy. This one required her to complete the challenge on consecutive days, which is fantastic for building habits and consolidating knowledge.
However, because we are full-time slow travelers, we changed countries, and the challenge went out the window. Ayla often gets into a routine she seems to settle into in any given country. She could be focused on Lego, math, and art. But in the following destination, it could look completely different.
When we moved to Australia, we suddenly had pets, endless boxes of Lego, and countless books, so the Table Fables app went out the window, along with the challenge!
[That’s not to say we don’t value or enjoy it! We think it’s excellent, and Ayla may pick it back up if and when she makes space for it again in the future].
How much cash can they win for completing challenges?
Every time your child completes Quest One, they receive £5 (or equivalent in the currency they signed up with). They can achieve this every month, reducing the subscription to £10. It’s up to parents whether they want to pay their child this money or keep the subscription cost low.
Children have one opportunity to complete Quest Two and win £20 and a cuddly toy. (Fables World posts cuddly toys all over the world). The second quest unlocks once the first is complete.
As a practical example, if you join for two months, you pay £30, but you can receive £30 and a cuddly toy in prizes.

On-site rewards
Your kid also gets fables “money” whenever they answer a question correctly. And money gets deducted for incorrect answers.
Kids can use the “money” (basically, Fables World’s online currency) to buy accessories for their avatars. At the moment, these are variously priced hats and helmets. So there’s a little math lesson in there as they determine how much money they want to spend on a particular item and how much it will leave them with. Budgeting for kids 101!
Pricing
Sign your kid up for the Tables Fables area that best suits what they need and where they’re at. You could choose Simply Math, Table Fables, Clever Clocks, or Farting Fractions.
It’s £15 per month for any given section of the site. Remember that you can get your payment back in two months if your child completes quests one and two!
The best thing is that you can sign up for the section you need, nail it, and then try another one. You can cancel or adjust your subscription anytime to match your kid’s needs.
Signing up for only one section at a time is recommended so your child can concentrate on one learning area at a time.
