2 Fun and Free Places to Visit on the Gold Coast with Kids

Published: October 25, 2025

We’ve enjoyed two recent trips to the Brisbane area with our kids. During that time, we visited the Gold Coast a couple of times. It’s a fantastic area for families to explore, with plenty to do. Although the theme parks may be the first thing that comes to mind, they’re not within everyone’s budget or plans. So, we’re sharing a couple of great alternatives that will keep the whole family happy for a few hours, or maybe even the entire day!

Usually, I would write an extensive post on things to do in the area, but we haven’t had a chance to explore the Gold Coast in depth yet. Therefore, I’ll add to this post when we visit again! In the meantime, check out our recommendations for two fun and free spots to add to your itinerary.

Broadwater Parklands

If you’re looking for the best places to play on the Gold Coast for families, a visit to Broadwater Parklands is a must.

There are plenty of fun and free things to do, so it’s easy to bring a picnic (or enjoy the nearby cafes) and stay for the whole day.

The Rockpools is a favourite for the kids. I believe it’s the only splash park on the Gold Coast, and it’s free to visit. When the littles have had enough, they can play in the playground next to the splash area or take a short walk to Washington Waters Playground.

Romy runs through the water at the Rockpools, the only splash park on the Gold Coast.

Make sure you stop for some tree climbing along the way if your kids are into that!

Washington Waters Playground is fun because it has a couple of unique features, including the giant jumping pillow and the ride-on things (not sure what they’re called) that follow a track around the playground.

In front of the playground is a sandy beach with an enclosed swimming area and a jumping/resting platform. Most of the Gold Coast is known for its surf beaches, but the calm waters here are perfect for family-friendly swimming.

Finally, if you’re willing to spend some money ($29 per person for 50 minutes), the beach and playground are next to the GC Aqua Park, where you can go crazy running, sliding, and climbing over a giant inflatable playground on the sea.

Burleigh Beach

Burleigh Beach is a fantastic spot to hang out on the Gold Coast for families. We started at the Saturday morning markets at Burleigh State School before heading to the beachside parks.

We parked at the North Burleigh Surf Lifesaving Carpark, a good place to start if you want to grab a coffee or a bite to eat.

It’s also the perfect spot for enjoying the endless coastal riding and walking paths, and, of course, the beach. The surf is big, but the kids will love playing in the sand and shallows.

We spent most of our time riding and walking between the playgrounds at Ed Hardy and Reg Chesters Parks.

Things to do on the Gold Coast with kids | In conclusion

Although we’ve only enjoyed two short trips to the Gold Coast, we found some excellent spots to hang out and enjoy ourselves. We hope you have as much fun as we did!
