North Macedonia sits between better-known Balkan destinations and often gets skipped on family travel itineraries, making it a reasonable place to visit if you prefer the road less traveled. Lake Ohrid is the main draw – the lake is one of Europe’s oldest, the old town above it is well preserved and walkable, and the swimming is excellent through the warmer months. Skopje divides opinion but has enough to fill a day or two with children, and the country is among the more affordable in the region.
