Hell’s Gate Rotorua Review

You can’t miss visiting a geothermal area if you’re in Rotorua. The region lies within the Taupo Volcanic Zone, which stretches from White Island to Mount Ruapehu. As a result, it’s the best place in New Zealand to marvel at geothermal wonders, soak in thermal waters, and catch a glimpse of what lies beneath the earth.

There are several geothermal parks in and near Rotorua. Hell’s Gate is a fantastic choice because it combines fascinating landscapes with mud spas and thermal pools – a one-stop experience. The location and its surrounds are also steeped in Maori legend, making it a culturally significant site and adding to its mystical appeal.

We had a fantastic afternoon at Hell’s Gate, and loved the diversity of activities available in one location. Read on to learn more about each part of The Hell’s Gate Experience.

Geothermal Walkways

The first part of the experience is a stroll along the reserve’s geothermal walkways. A loop of around 2km covers all the features, or you can opt for a shorter trail.

We did the self-guided Hell’s Gate Geothermal Walk interactive trail, using a park map to explain each feature we passed. Guided walks are available at specific times and are an excellent way to gain deeper insights into the area.

The pathways offer a safe vantage point for viewing the steaming earth and bubbling mud pools. Some of the notable features include an active mud volcano and land coral growing from silica deposits.

From this otherworldly terrain, the pathway leads you through stunning native bushland. You’ll soon get a clear view of the picturesque Kakahi Falls, the Southern Hemisphere’s largest hot waterfall.

Maori Carving

At the walkway’s end, you’ll get the chance to try Maori carving. Choose your favorite from traditional designs before learning a basic carving technique. Then craft your masterpiece before having it treated so you can take it home.

We thought this part of the experience was a really nice touch, offering a glimpse into Maori culture and art.

Mud Baths

Local Maori people have utilized the geothermal mud and mineral-rich waters in these areas for centuries, which are revered for their healing properties. Many people report feeling rejuvenated after lathering their bodies with mud, then soaking in the soothing waters.

The mud baths and sulphur spas are in the same area. You start with a mud bath and finish the experience relaxing in the spas.

After changing into your bathing suit and storing everything you don’t need at the spa in one of the big plastic tubs, it’s time to get started with the mud bath! Spread the silky smooth mud over as much of your body as you wish, being careful not to get any near your eyes.

Then sit on the side of the mud pools to let it dry, or relax in the warm, muddy water at your designated pool. The mud baths have a 20-minute time limit for health and safety reasons. A staff member will tell you when 20 minutes is up, and it’s time for a shower to wash off the mud.

Sulphur Spas

After showering, spend as long as you like soaking in the sulphur spas. It’s the perfect way to finish your day and head home feeling revitalized. The spa temperatures can range from 37 to 41 degrees. We found they were ideal for the whole family to enjoy. If you want to cool off, the cold plunge pool offers the ultimate rejuvenation.

Hell’s Gate Review | In Conclusion

We highly recommend The Hell’s Gate Experience for families and anyone looking for a complete package, including walkways, mud baths, and spas.
